Stenciled Tote Bag

{Teacher Appreciation Gift Idea}

Stenciled Tote Bags {The Preppy Strawberry}

This week is Teacher Appreciation week at my daughters school.   My original idea for teacher appreciation gifts completely changed because my daughter is still out of school recovering from having her tonsils removed last week.

I always try to get the teacher something useful instead of something that just become clutter – My mom has taught school for over 23 years and I remember growing up all of the apple coffee mugs that were in our cupboard!  LOTS!

My original plan was to put something small together each day and send to school – something fun but something to let her teacher know how much she is appreciated!  Can you imagine having 25 six and seven year olds every day!!  Yikes!!

The tote bag is the perfect size for an every day purse, a tote bag to toss your iPad, nook, or kindle in along with some note pads etc.  Or for a school teacher toss in your papers to grade, your lesson planner and misc. school items!

The bags caught my eye and I had them in my cart last month but ended up putting them back because I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with them? Other than I thought they were adorable!  Then a few days later this image was in my pinterest stream …. So you know where I went right?  There as my idea and I went back for my bags!

The Apple Tag on the bag was a free printable form dimple prints.

I created my stencil on my cricut using freezer paper and then I stenciled each bag with everyone’s first initials.

I think the bags turned out super cute!  I even made one for myself to start – just incase I didn’t like it at least I would be stuck with my initial 😉

This one I made for my mom – my Mom teaches 3rd grade and is also the after school teacher.  Lilly goes to after school almost every day because I work so we also gave Nana a teacher appreciation gift.

{DIY} Terra Cotta Jewelry Tower

Terra Cotta Pot Jewlery Stand {The Preppy Strawberry}

I saw this idea last summer on pinterest and I knew I had to try it!  It’s  pretty easy craft  it just takes some time to complete the steps.

Here’s what you will need:

Terra cotta potsyou pick the sizes!  I picked mine up at Joann’s fabrics

craft paint –  choose any color you want for the base.  I used the Joann’s brand paint.

White, Black, and Brown Paintto create the antique washed look on my project.

clear coat glaze sprayyou can find this with the spray paint

Gorilla glue or crazy glueI used gorilla glue.

Terra Cotta Pot Jewlery Stand {The Preppy Strawberry}

Picture of my small gray stand – this one I use in my kitchen for change and well as you can see in the pictures below just about anything thing lands on this stand!

1. First step is to glue your pieces together.  I used the hole in the center of the pot to mark the tray for the center.

2.  Let the glue dry before you start painting

3. Paint your pots with your base color – I used two or three coats.  You will need to be the judge.

4.  Once my paint dried I started the antiquing process.  First I used white.  You will want to squirt the white into a cup of water – then paint the wash on your stand.  Then take a paper towel and wipe the paint around.  Let this dry and then repeat with the brown or black – your choice.  I used brown as my next wash layer.  You can repeat as necessary to create the perfect look!

5.  Once it has dried you will want to spray your stand with a clear glaze to give it a finished look!

Recycled Egg Carton Wreath

Recycled Egg Carton Wreath {The Preppy Strawberry}

Looking for a fun recycled craft to make with your kids or class? This also makes a great gift for Mother’s day …. Also a great idea for the kids to make for Grandma!

We made these recycled egg carton wreath’s with Lilly’s Daisy Troop. They turned out super cute! The girls recycled egg cartons and then we cut them up and made flowers out of them!

First, we cut the egg cartons apart and shaped them into flowers. After, we created the flower shape we painted all the flowers a solid color. Next, once they flowers dried we added some detail to the flowers. After everything dried we hot glued the flowers to the circle form. We used cardboard for the wreath form and painted it green.

We did this project as part of “using our resources wisely” Daisy chapter but this would be another great project for Earth Day. The girls ended up giving the wreath to there Mom’s as a Mother’s Day gift.

Penguin Art Project

Penguin Art Project {The Preppy Strawberry)

Looking for a fun art project to keep the kids busy this winter?  Well look no further … Penguin Art project will help keep them busy!  This project we did in two days only because we started the background too late one evening.   This is a perfect project for the snow day – start the project in the morning and paint the back ground first  and let it dry completely.  Then in the afternoon wrap up with finishing the penguin and adding any last details.
SUPPLIES:

  1. Paper – white paper for background, black, white, orange
  2. Paint
  3. scissors
  4. misc. supplies, scrap fabric, yarn,

we used 8 1/2 X 11 watercolor paper but you can use a larger piece – it’s up to you!  Just note that depending on your paper size will depend on how large your penguin will need to be cut. For paint, I just used the poster board paint that we had on hand.

Step 1:   for this step I just put out all the paint I had and told her to create a background for the penguin.  – As you can tell she created a rainbow background with all of the colors.  Let the paper completely dry before moving onto the next steps.

Step 2:  once the paper has dried start working on your penguin.  To create the penguin you will cute a U shape out of your black paper.  This will be the penguins body.  Now, make sure your body is small or big enough to fit on your background paper you used in step 1.  After, you have the black U cut out – take the white paper and now cut out another U but make this one a little smaller – this will be the penguins front.  For the wings, beak, and feet  just have them cut them out any way they would like!  Set these pieces aside

Penguin Art Project {The Preppy Strawberry)
Step 3:  Take your extra white paper and cut out your iceberg – this is what your penguin is going to sit on and what you will be gluing to the background first.

Step 4:  Glue your iceberg to your background.  Once you have this attached start putting your penguin together on the background.  Once your penguin is assembled you can move onto decorating and dressing penguin.
We used fabric scraps and pomp poms for his hat and gloves.

1) Begin by emptying the two bottles of glue into a bowl. Then fill bottles with warm water and shake. Empty into your bowl.

2.) Add some food coloring. I used Wilton Food Colors  (all I had on hand) – she picked purple and green and I spooned out about a 1/2 tsp. of wilton food coloring.  By the way I dyed my hands purple on the purple GAK – YIKES!!!  In the tutorial from Lil Luna she used Betty Crocker food coloring so pretty much any food coloring will work!

Homemade GAK {The Preppy Strawberry}

3) Add 1/2 cup warm water to your cup. Add 1 tsp. borax to the water and mix until borax dissolves. Then pour this into your glue bowl. Start stirring and you will notice how it starts becoming stringy. Keep mixing by using your hands and squishing around. You will notice after a few minutes that it has become pretty gelatinous.Homemade GAK {The Preppy Strawberry}

 4.) Now, it’s time to let the kids play!! Have fun 😉

Boutique Burp Cloth Tutorial

A few weeks ago,  I whipped up these cute burp cloths for one of my sorority sisters who just had a baby girl at the end of May.  These are so easy to make!!  I used a cloth diaper as my pattern for a few of them and then others I made to fit on the shoulder.  When Lilly was little I loved these!  I made myself a few out of cloth diapers but when I saw the chenille at Joann’s I had to give it shot!

Here is a quick tutorial on how to make your own boutique burp cloths.

Supplies:
printed fabric of your choice
chenille fabric – i found mine at Joann’s
thread
pins

As for my size, I had an extra cloth diaper on hand and I used this as my pattern for a few of my burp cloths.  I also made some that were about  9 X 14.  This size was perfect fit for over the shoulder.

 Once you have your printed and chenille cut to size you will need to pin them together. **Pin right sides together** Once pinned you can start to sew and leave about 2-3inch opening.  Sorry, I forgot to take picture of this step.  You will then turn them right side out and then blind stitch your opening closed.

 This is what your burp cloths will look like once you are finished

 I rolled mine up and tied with ribbon – you do not have to do this step
Example of both sides

If you have any questions about how to make these let me know!  I will be more than happy to help  you out!!

Enjoy!!
